Why Does Sgibs prefer longer games while ZFarls would opt for a shorter game?

Quick, set it to 6 min quarters while he isn't looking.

Lets take a look at how our gameplan, confidence and strategy can all be effected by the length of Madden quarters!

When playing a shorter game you must do these 3 things very well. -

Posses the ball
Great clock and t.o. managment
Make a big play when the time comes in the game

When locking into a battle in a long game, you need to be able to do these 3 things well.

Have a wide array of sets on offense and be comfortable using all of them
Pick up on small tendencies of the opponent
Make quick adjustments at the start of each drive

Sgibs LOVES playing 5-7 minutes games because it gives him a chance to outclass his opponent and really use all the plays he keeps in his playbook. On defense he can make adjustments against a player who only has 5-7 plays and shut them down. He picks up on the small differences in your offense and can use these tendencies to get stops and force turnovers. His games often start close, but slowly he pulls away and can score on almost evey possession.

How Sgibs attacks a shorter game in his own words -

Any short game needs to have some type of specific game plan. What you need to focus on in a shorter game is primarily dependent on who gets the ball at half time. The vast majority of winners in shorter games are the ones who receive the ball first in the second half. They will tend to have the ball just before the end of the first half and will then again have the ball at the start of the half. This all has to do with the timing of drives and the actual amount of game time. A rule of thumb for ANY game that has three minute quarters or less is to ALWAYS kick, if given the opportunity.

Once we kick the ball off we need to start thinking defense. The way we play defense needs to be different as well. We donâ€™t have the luxury to sit back on our heals, make our reads, and assumptions of how our opponent wants to attack us. In short games each opponent will be lucky if they touch the ball three times. This means we must ATTACK our opponent. Over the years we have preached aggressive defense over coverage defense. Now is the time to implement that strategy. Shorter games favor the aggressor. All we need is that big turnover and we will all but seal our fait.

Now that you have made your turnover/stop you will want to look to put up at least 3 points. Thatâ€™s right if you have to settle for three then you are going to settle for three. There is no time to play hero in a short game. Take your three points and kick the ball off to your opponent with very little time remaining in the half (your getting the ball in the second half). Once we get the ball in the second half we need to base how we are going to attack our opponent by if we scored a touchdown or a field goal. If we put up a touchdown, look to play ball control and donâ€™t be scared to burn time off the clock. If we scored only a field goal, we still want to play ball control but with a bit more urgency. By the end of this drive the score should at least be 10-0. Now we have our opponent right where we wanted them from the get go. We have a two score lead and our opponent has the ball with very little time remaining in the game. At this point the game is all but over, they need a miracle.

Remember that each game we play needs a game plan. This is simply an overlay of what we need to expect when playing a shorter game. It wonâ€™t always go according to plan but if we stick to this formula for shorter style games you will certainly be the victor more times then not!

On the other hand, ZFarls loves to play in short, close games.

He is more interested in the time battle in football and the quick adjustments that need to be made. He tends to turn the ball over less and be more careful. He can also run the ball well to really shorten the game and is always ready to make a critical play. He knows that each play is more magnified and is comfortable running his top 3-5 plays. In short games, this is all he needs to have good success against even some of the top players out there. On defense, one stop in a short game can mean a victory and any turnover almost assures the win. Having a good “one” minute offense and being a great time manager can be the difference in getting 3 points in a win, or losing the game.

This Week In Madden Show 17 was a great success! We gave out tons of madden 10 tips and madden 10 money plays. We also took like calls and broke down all the action that happened at MLG Orlando. We also answered mailbag questions from the forums and took question on twitter @maddenbible.

5 Common Ways To Lose Madden Games

Here are some key points which will cost average players Madden games against higher level players. If you consistently make these mistakes, you will be destined to your current level and will have trouble beating top competition.

1. Getting Away From Your Gameplan -

If you don’t play with set audibles and some type of consistent set’s of plays then you are going to lose many games. Even if the game is going well early, you will be more apt to make drastic changes and pick a random play in a big spot. Our Detroit O-book is a full scheme which not only gives you plays, but explains what situation to use them in AND what to look for to make sure you call the right play. Ideally a scheme will build off everything you do before. If you are frantically changing and not setting up your opponent, you will struggle to win games.

2. Turnovers -

Do you constantly press the recievers button and say “pick”? Well, if you know that the pass is going to be in tight coverage than why are you throwing it? Look sometimes you bobble the pass or the Qb’s acc is off, but a good chunk of the time you throw risky passes and aren’t shocked when they get intercepted. Turnovers in this game will destroy you. You can withstand a fumble or 2 but any good player will capatilize on these turnovers and put the game away early.

3. Mismanagment Of Clock -

This will end up costing you valuable points. Whether you run out of time OR leave your opponent too much time, you need to be aware of all situations that can occur. You must know the score, timeout situation and clock. I have seen too many drives end before the half where players look for one extra play instead of taking the 3 points. I know field goals aren’t as sexy as getting a nice touchdown, but those points especially just before a half can be huge. Also if you don’t really have a chance to score and throw a pick, you will lose too often.

4. Picking the wrong team-

Maybe you saw the Colts play on Sunday night and like their style. So next time you hop online you decide to take them for a spin. You usually use the patriots and figure, that they are similar teams due to ratings. WRONG. Indy doesn’t have a dominant big time WR like Randy Moss. Sure Reggie Wayne is good in real life but he isn’t built the same way as a Madden WR. The Colts can do tremendous things with there DE’s in Madden 10 but the Patriots game is blitzing the LB’s and holding up the line with their bulk. This scheme won’t translate well and you will feel out of place. Picking a team that doesn’t optomize your strength will come back to haunt you in a big moment.

5. Lacking Stick Smarts-

Notice we didn’t say Stick Skill. If you have one on one outside coverage and simply need to make a user swat, then why go for the pick? If you have safety help coming in over the top, then why not go for the pick? These are two situations that good players rarely mess up but they make a world of difference. If you seem to be giving up long runs, is it because your defense isn’t set up properly, or your going for the hit stick and whiffing?

If you play a tight game and lose on one of these small things it can be very frustrating. We saw the Pats dominate the Colts and lose because of a bad judgment on Risk/Reward call. Good teams seem to win the tight games most of the time. Alot of it is just being calm and prepared. Having a plan will help you with your confidence and the more situations you come across, the better you will be at managing them. Use your mind when you play because it is powerful than anyone’s thumbs could ever be!

Using Game Theory To Dominate In Madden!

Here at the Madden Bible, we not only strive to bring you the best plays from the community, but also the best strategy.

This article will jump into the topic of Game Theory. If your not familiar with Game Theory here is a definition : Game theory attempts to mathematically capture behavior in strategic situations, in which an individual’s success in making choices depends on the choices of others. While initially developed to analyze competitions in which one individual does better at another’s expense.

Over at Academic Earth they offer free courses from major university. The specific course on game theory comes from Yale and is taught by professor Ben Polak. In the introduction class, he introduces game theory and common game theory scenarios. He offers five tips which I feel can translate into the Madden world and help you improve your game.

1. Do NOT Play Strictly Dominated Strategies: If it is 4th and 1 and you know your opponent can stop your FB Dive with a specific defensive play than you CAN NOT call the FB dive in that scenario. Yes, he may be too scared to call that play because it does allow longer gains if you call an outside run or over the top pass. However, the FB Dive is what game theorists call “Dominated” in this scenario. No matter what you have to go to another play that gives you a chance to succeed. Calling a pass play can always be a risky proposition in a short yardage scenario but if you do call the dive and he calls his specific FB dive stopping play than the game is over.

2. Rational Decisions Sometimes Lead to Bad Outcomes: Sometimes you make the right call and step up in a big situation. However you can only control your opponent to a certain extent. One thing you can’t control is when your players decide to drop the football! Perhaps you went for it on 4th and 5 because you were in No Mans Land. You couldn’t kick a fg and punting would barely net you any yards. You decide to go for it and get to the first down line. After you cross the yellow line, your player fumbles. Your decision to go for it was properly calculated and made sense but it feels wrong because Ed Reed is now streaking the othe way with the football for six. Keep your head up and know you made the right decision!

3. Madden Players = Evil : On average 30% of players in studies took the A Option which was less moral but offered more reward. To move this to madden thinking, I get hundreds of E-Mails each week asking about quick glitches and ways to get online wins. People send me messages about how to D/C and plays that can score TD’s on every play.

Well, its too bad I cant sell these people fat loss pills that will make them lose 100 pounds in just hours. I also have an uncle in Nigeria who can get them 1 Million Dollars if they just let me borrow 10 dollars!

My message here is that people are always looking for quick fixes to tough problems. If there is a glitch out there, most people will use it. You must be careful with who you are playing against and always prepare for the worst case scenario. Bellicheck is a master of this situation, he always knows every possible thing that could happen in a game and coaches accordingly. You need to remember that Madden Players are evil and will do anything for a W. You don’t have to play unfairly, but you need to be prepared to defend against it.

4 Put Yourself In Other People’s Shoes: Prof Polack isn’t telling us to play nice here. He is asking us to think about what our opponent is thinking and what situation he is preparing for. If you can imagine the opponents thoughts than you will be able to take them into account when making your decision.

If you need help in this aspect than bust out your NES or get an emulator and play Tecmo Super Bowl. This game had only 8 plays to choose from including 4 run and 4 pass. On defense your opponent would try and guess what play you picked and if he was right it resulted in a sack or loss of yard on a running play.

If the game was on the line and you needed a deep pass, you only had 2 shotgun options to choose from. Basically you had a coin flip chance of your opponent getting in your head and getting a sack. Therefore you always had to be one step ahead of your opponent and guess what he thought you were going to pick, then pick the opposite. (Then he would pick the opposite?!?!?) The result was when the ball was snapped your were so anxious to see if he picked your play and got a near instant rush.

Tecmo worked so well because the 8 plays created a nice balance of guessing games. Now in Madden you can select hundreds of plays, hot routes, and audibles. The defense selects from their own screen. However, you still want to step onto that otherside of the field and get into your opponents head before you pick your play!

5 You Can’t Get What You Want, Until You Know What You Want: Think of what you want to accomplish on your drive. Are you burning clock or conserving clock? Should you stay in bounds or do you need to pick up the extra yards? Is the game over with two more first downs or can your opponent stop the clock? These are issues that can decide games and rarely do good players mess them up.

Brian Westbrook made the ultimate real world sacrifice a last season when he took didn’t run in a touchdown and went down so the Eagles could run out the clock, SMART PLAY!!! Most stat hungry players would have got the TD and given the other team the ball back which is not smart strategy because you can’t many points without the possessing the ball.

Lets just say know what you are trying to accomplish before you get out onto the field. Most gamers are playing for the Win and there is no reason not to put yourself in the best position to do so. I once let a player score a TD with 14 seconds left to take the lead when all he needed was a FG as time expired. 78 Yard Bomb and 2 Point conversion later I had that kid with a long ride home to think about what a moron he was. These things do happen, know what you want and you want to WIN!

Madden can often be a big mental battle for advanced players with equal skill levels. Often the games come down to that one big play and these strategies will help to put you in the best position to win.

Just because Madden can turn into a giant presnap battle doesn’t mean that sticks don’t matter. When that ball is snapped the mind games are over and the sticks are all that matter, so get in the lab!
