User Picks, Madden Bible style
Lets talk user picks. There is actually quite a bit that goes into this skill in Madden. Many factors ranging from in game player, user ability, awareness, and the cohanas to take a risk all matter at being succseful in this trade. User picking can be somewhat of a beautiful art form. Some clame to be the best in all the land, some clame to have none. What we here at the Madden Bible want to do is shed some light on how we like to do this!
First, there a few things that will accel our learning curve. The most important part of getting high numbers of user picks is picking a in game player to “user control.” User control means you define the actions of the character in the game, you tell him to speed burst, you tell him to jump, and you tell him to hit stick. We do not let the CPU decide how this player will react on the field. There are a few ratings in the game and player characteristics which make ideal situations for us. See below:
Speed-93 and above is ideal
Jump-95 and above is ideal
Catch-60-65 is ideal, anything above is a luxery
Height-6’3 is the ideal PERFECT height
Now you can certainly have success with none of the above ratings but they certainly help. On to the strategy.
When usering a defender you want to place yourself in a area on the field that allows for the most versatility in both the run game and pass game. This area would be the middle of the field. It gives us equal approach to all points on the field. If we positioned ourself to deep in coverage we wont be able to assist with the run game and vice versa. So when picking coverages we always want to play as a defender that is in a yellow zone over the middle of the field for zone. (I only call man when I am bringing the house)
Our next move is all ability on the users end. As the user we need to be able to read what the offense is doing. We need to hoan in on there tendencies in short and long yardage situations. Once we pick up on these we need to be able to react in a manner that best fits the defense. Once this is acomplished we then need to simply MAKE BIG PLAYS. Lets look into how we are going to make these plays.
The big thing in Madden 09 is how the “strafe” button was taken out on offense. This button gave the ability for the offensive player to be running full speed down field and on a dime square up to the line of scrimmage. However, in Madden 09 that ability has been removed from the game on the offensive side of the ball. Luckily for the defense we can still use this tactic.
Why this benefits the defender is this, in video game land its all about getting the best animation possible. Being squared up to the ball will allow us to consitantly square up to the ball to make a bid for the user pick by getting the best animation possible. This can be done with a button combination held down pre snap. We want to hold down the turbo button RT (Right Trigger) and also the strafe button LT (Left Trigger). Once the ball is snapped we will be going full speed but at the same time we are squared up with the line of scrimmage. Now that we are in perfect postion we need to read the offense and break on the ball. This part is up to you and really will take some time to get confidence in your ability. To succeed at a high level with USER interceptions we need to trust that we will constently make plays. To make an attempt at intercepting the ball we simply need to anticipate the balls arrival and hold down Y to creat the animation for our defender.
I hope this helps all you Bible maniacs out there.
